    Do constrained immigration rates and high β diversity explain contrasting productivity–diversity patterns measured at different scales?

    The relationship between productivity and diversity is controversial because of disparity between unimodal and monotonic patterns, especially when occurring simultaneously at different scales. We used stream-side artificial channels to investigate how the availability of a major resource (leaf litter) affected stream invertebrate abundance and diversity at leaf-pack and whole-channel scales. At the larger scale, invertebrate diversity increased monotonically with increasing litter resource density, whereas at the smaller scale the relationship was hump-shaped, in keeping with reports in the literature. This divergence at higher resource levels suggests that multiple mechanisms may be operating. Our results indicate that consistently high species turnover (β diversity) caused the monotonic pattern because of a species-area or “sampling effect” in which new species accumulate with increasing number of samples. The hump-shaped pattern was due to constrained immigration because of a “dilution effect” in which a limited number of immigrants is spread out among the increasing number of available patches. We propose that the relationship between productivity or resource availability and α diversity is generally hump-shaped and the scale-dependent contrast in the relationship only arises where the species pool is large and β diversity is high. Differences in β diversity may, therefore, explain some of the contrasting patterns in the productivity–diversity relationship previously reported.We suggest that continuing immigration by rare taxa is important in sustaining species diversity when productivity is high. The hump-shaped pattern has implications for the impact of anthropogenic ecosystem enrichment on species diversity

    Ten minutes ergometer rowing exercise increases pressure pain thresholds in high performance rowers

    Background: Mechanical hypoalgesia has been demonstrated following bouts of acute exercise. The pain relieving properties of exercise thus have the potential to be utilised to help manage painful musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis. The mechanisms that underlie this exercise - induced hypoalgesia are poorly understood; as is the type of exercise, the duration and the intensity required to produce hypoalgesia. A complete knowledge of these factors is required before therapeutic exercise programs for pain management can be implemented on an evidence basis in the clinical setting. This research provides a clearly defined exercise protocol which induces hypoalgesia. Hypothesis: Ten minutes ergometer rowing increases pressure pain thresholds in high performance rowers. Study design: Laboratory Study, within - group repeated measures Methods: 20 high performance rowers (13M:7F; mean age: 20.8 years ± 1.74) had pressure pain threshold measurements performed at three anatomical sites (2 local, 1 remote) before and immediately following 10 minutes ergometer rowing at 50-80% estimated VO2max. Results: Pressure pain thresholds were significantly increased (P < 0.05) at all anatomical locations post - exercise compared to pre - exercise. Conclusions: High intensity ergometer rowing induces statistically and clinically significant mechanical hypoalgesia at both local and remote sites in high performance rowers. Clinical relevance: Ergometer rowing is a low impact activity that may prove beneficial in the management of painful joint and muscle conditions, such as osteoarthritis

    Survey of the vertebrate fauna of the Dotswood area, North Queensland

    The results of a survey of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish of the Dotswood area west of Townsville are presented. Habitats included in the survey were woodland, open forest, tall open forest, closed forest (rainforest), riparian forest and rocky outcrops. A total of 297 species of vertebrates were observed using a variety of survey techniques including live trapping, pit trapping, observational transects, mist netting and spotlighting. Exact locations of observation and indices of relative abundance of each species are included

    Vertebrate fauna surveys were carried out on the summits of Mount Cleveland, Mount Elliot and Mount Halifax in north Queensland. The main focus was on mammals and birds, but observations on all vertebrate groups are included. Habitats included rainforest and open eucalypt/casuarina forest. The surveys recorded a total of 136 species of vertebrates including 17 mammal, 77 bird, 32 reptile and 10 frog species. Habitat descriptions and measures of relative abundance for mammals and birds are included

    Water-quality and ecosystem impacts of recreation in streams: Monitoring and management

    There is limited published information on the impact of bathing on stream water quality and ecology, except on human pathogens and health. We investigated the relationships between environmental quality of streams and recreational activity at five sites in the Australian Wet Tropics. The streams normally had very low concentrations of nutrients and suspended solids (TSS), but concentrations fluctuated widely during spates, thereby causing difficulties in discriminating impacts. Daily bathing activity disturbed sediments causing an increase in TSS and turbidity, which greatly exceeded national guidelines for maintenance of aesthetic qualities. TSS returned to background levels overnight as bathing areas were flushed clean. Total nitrogen and phosphate concentrations also increased with bather numbers, and phosphate concentrations were directly proportional to bather density. Faecal coliform concentrations were elevated by bathers at one site. Ecological effects of bathers were equivocal and greater on algal than invertebrate assemblages. Water quality degradation, although transient, suggested that some sites were close to their carrying capacity for bathers. Our results show that water quality may vary with local conditions and that cost-effective monitoring and management require development of cause-effect models of water quality processes for each stream site

    Enhancing whole-of-river conservation

    We argue for improved conservation of freshwater ecosystems at catchment or eco-regional scales by explicit assignment of values to all river sections and wetlands, recognising current disturbance, and aiming for ‘no further harm’ to the commons. The need is indicated by the global deterioration of biodiversity and ecosystem services of rivers and wetlands, increasing demands on water and land resources, and climate change. Regional pressures include multiple jurisdictions, competing demands, piecemeal management, pollution and habitat impacts. Effective resource and conservation management needs to integrate multiple uses via governance of activities of stakeholders, recognising hydrogeomorphic, water quality and ecological properties of ecosystems. Complete ecological protection is impractical amidst water-resource and land-use development, but we suggest that all river reaches and wetlands be given a conservation rating based on habitat, biodiversity and connectivity values. We present a straightforward approach to spatial conservation rating of freshwaters, using hydrogeomorphic typology and assignment of conservation values on the basis of available information and expert elicitation. We illustrate the approach by using the large Burdekin River catchment in north-eastern Australia. This approach is complementary to more spatially focused conservation prioritisation and could greatly improve management for sustainability, reduce further decline in conservation values, and facilitate rehabilitation

    Limited evidence for quantitative contribution of rare and endangered species to agricultural production

    Biodiversity underpins ecosystem functions that provide benefits to people, yet the role of rare and endangered species (RES) in supporting ecosystem services is unclear. Thus, it remains controversial whether arguments for conservation that focus on ecosystem services align with the protection of RES. We designed a systematic review protocol to critically assess the evidence for quantitative contributions of RES to terrestrial agricultural production, which is a key driver of biodiversity change and, simultaneously, could suffer from the loss of ecosystem services provided by biodiversity. Our review search criteria required that studies: 1) provide information on RES, 2) focus on an ecosystem service relevant for agriculture; and 3) include a quantitative measure of agricultural production. Surprisingly, we found only four studies that fulfilled these criteria, which was insufficient to perform a meta-analysis of results. Thus, we highlight here the gap in quantitative research, discuss the implications of this knowledge gap for the conservation of RES, and suggest future research directions. We conclude that further quantitative research is urgently needed to better inform conservation and agricultural policies, including research that focuses specifically on RES, incorporates more ecosystem services, and covers a wider range of climatic and socioeconomic contexts

    Do smokers have greater risk of delayed and non-union after fracture, osteotomy and arthrodesis?: a systematic review with meta-analysis

    Objectives: Systematic review and meta-analysis of published observational cohort studies. To quantify the increased risk smokers have of experiencing a delayed and/or non-union in fractures, spinal fusion, osteotomy, arthrodesis or established non-unions. Setting: Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE), Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED) and Web of Science Core Collection from 1966 to 2015. Study eligibility criteria, participants and interventions: Observational cohort studies that reported adult smokers and non-smokers with delayed and/or non-union or time to union of the fracture, spinal fusion, osteotomy, arthrodesis or established non-union were eligible. Data extraction and outcome measures: 2 authors screen titles, abstracts and full papers. Data were extracted by 1 author and checked independently by a second. The relative risk ratios of smoking versus non-smoking and the mean difference in time to union patients developing a delayed and/or non-union were calculated. Results: The search identified 3013 articles; of which, 40 studies were included. The meta-analysis of 7516 procedures revealed that smoking is linked to an increased risk of delayed and/or non-union. When considered collectively, smokers have 2.2 (1.9 to 2.6) times the risk of experiencing delayed and/or non-union. In all the subgroups, the increased risk was always ≥1.6 times that of non-smokers. In the patients where union did occur, it was a longer process in the smokers. The data from 923 procedures were included and revealed an increase in time to union of 27.7 days (14.2 to 41.3). Conclusions: Smokers have twice the risk of experiencing a non-union after fracture, spinal fusion, osteotomy, arthrodesis or treatment of non-union. Time to union following fracture, osteotomy, arthrodesis or treatment of an established non-union is longer in smokers. Smokers should be encouraged to abstain from smoking to improve the outcome of these orthopaedic treatments

    Resection and resolution of bone marrow lesions associated with an improvement of pain after total knee replacement: a novel case study using a 3-Tesla metal artefact reduction MRI sequence

    We present our case report using a novel metal artefact reduction magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence to observe resolution of subchondral bone marrow lesions (BMLs), which are strongly associated with pain, in a patient after total knee replacement surgery. Large BMLs were seen preoperatively on the 3-Tesla MRI scans in a patient with severe end stage OA awaiting total knee replacement surgery. Twelve months after surgery, using a novel metal artefact reduction MRI sequence, we were able to visualize the bone-prosthesis interface and found complete resection and resolution of these BMLs. This is the first reported study in the UK to use this metal artefact reduction MRI sequence at 3-Tesla showing that resection and resolution of BMLs in this patient were associated with an improvement of pain and function after total knee replacement surgery. In this case it was associated with a clinically significant improvement of pain and function after surgery. Failure to eradicate these lesions may be a cause of persistent postoperative pain that is seen in up to 20% of patients following TKR surgery

    Fresh Waters and Fish Diversity: Distribution, Protection and Disturbance in Tropical Australia

    Background: Given the globally poor protection of fresh waters for their intrinsic ecological values, assessments are needed to determine how well fresh waters and supported fish species are incidentally protected within existing terrestrial protected-area networks, and to identify their vulnerability to human-induced disturbances. To date, gaps in data have severely constrained any attempt to explore the representation of fresh waters in tropical regions.\ud \ud Methodology and Results: We determined the distribution of fresh waters and fish diversity in the Wet Tropics of Queensland, Australia. We then used distribution data of fresh waters, fish species, human-induced disturbances, and the terrestrial protected-area network to assess the effectiveness of terrestrial protected areas for fresh waters and fish species. We also identified human-induced disturbances likely to influence the effectiveness of freshwater protection and evaluated the vulnerability of fresh waters to these disturbances within and outside protected areas. The representation of fresh waters and fish species in the protected areas of the Wet Tropics is poor: 83% of stream types defined by order, 75% of wetland types, and 89% of fish species have less than 20% of their total Wet Tropics length, area or distribution completely within IUCN category II protected areas. Numerous disturbances affect fresh waters both within and outside of protected areas despite the high level of protection afforded to terrestrial areas in the Wet Tropics (>60% of the region). High-order streams and associated wetlands are influenced by the greatest number of human-induced disturbances and are also the least protected. Thirty-two percent of stream length upstream of protected areas has at least one human-induced disturbance present.\ud \ud Conclusions/Significance: We demonstrate the need for greater consideration of explicit protection and off-reserve management for fresh waters and supported biodiversity by showing that, even in a region where terrestrial protection is high, it does not adequately capture fresh waters
